Aboriginal corporation to run Public housing in NT
By PETER ROWE
In a move set to improve outcomes for social housing tenants, the Northern Territory Government is transferring the management of 100 public housing properties in Palmerston to the community housing sector.
From this week, the Yilli Rreung Housing Aboriginal Corporation will take over management responsibilities for these homes, continuing the organisation’s commitment to providing culturally appropriate, secure and affordable housing.
Yilli Housing already manages over 200 properties across the Greater Darwin region and will now oversee tenancy and property management for these additional homes in Palmerston, while the government retains ownership of the homes.
As part of the transition, Yilli Housing has been working closely with tenants and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Community Development to ensure a smooth transition and help them connect with local services and support programs.
Nearly 800 homes have already been transferred to Community Housing Providers, with 601 transferred this year in the Greater Darwin Region.
“Yilli Housing is proud to launch the transfer of 100 community homes on November 18 – a significant step towards ensuring secure, affordable, and culturally respectful housing for communities across the NT,” Yilli Rreung Housing Aboriginal Corporation CEO, Amanda Doyle said.
“This initiative goes beyond housing; it’s about creating spaces where people feel valued and supported, reflecting the unique cultural identities and needs of our communities.”
