Anger after sacred Victorian site damaged

March 16, 2025

An Aboriginal elder has called on the Victorian State government to enforce laws to protect cultural sites after damage to an ancient midden site in Torrumbarry, north-west of Echuca, was discovered recently.

Wollithiga elder Uncle Henry Atkinson said he was devastated.

“Once our culture is lost, we can never get it back to what it used to be,” he told the ABC. “We can’t replace that.”

The Midden site by the banks of the Murray River has had steps carved into it.

Uncle Henry said more needed to be done to enforce the laws that protected cultural sites.

“The laws really don’t work. Nobody pushes those laws,” he said.

“Out there is my country. That is my home. It’s about time people started recognising that it is Wolithiga country.”

Parks Victoria installed permanent fencing last week to protect the site, damaged many believe by ignorant campers.
