Australian Greens flying the Flags for Truth and Justice in 2025

June 19, 2025

On the eve of January 26, the Australian Greens have said they will bring their bill to establish a Federal Truth and Justice Commission to a vote in Parliament before the year is over.

Despite the Labor Government making their 2022 election commitment to implement the Uluru Statement from the Heart in full – including Truth, Treaty, and Voice – Labor has yet to commit to voting for the Greens’ bill.

A Federal Truth and Justice Commission would capture Australia’s collective history of pre-colonial, colonial and collective history, while moving towards healing and a pathway forward for Australia’s diverse and vibrant communities.

Opposition Leader, Peter Dutton, recently announced if elected Prime Minister at the 2025 federal election, he would refuse to stand in front of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags at press conferences.

In response to this, Senator Dorinda Cox has announced the campaign, ‘Let’s Fly the Flags for Truth and Justice’ to show solidarity with the First Peoples of Australia.

“If the Federal Parliament is serious about First Nations Justice, they would vote in favour of the Greens Bill for Truth and Justice,” Senator Cox said.

“This is a critical issue that requires Federal leadership for our collective healing journey, it is about building a better future through a positive and inclusive process for all.

“On January 26 each year we have a national conversation, but this year we see Opposition Leader Peter Dutton kicking off the culture wars. We need to show that equity is about peace, respect and inclusion.

“In order to have a truly reconciled nation we must listen and understand the history and legacies of the past to shape our future together as Australians.

“We are an amazing culturally diverse and vibrant nation of many people from so many backgrounds, but as Australians we are connected to the oldest living cultures in the world.

“The time is now, your voice and support as an ally is so powerful.”

Senator Cox is asking people to fly the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Flags high and proudly and to flood the internet with the hashtags – #FlytheFlags25 and #TruthandJustice, right up until the federal election.

“Peter Dutton attacks our flags but we fly them with pride to recognise our sovereignty, and we want all Australians to join us and show their support as allies. Get a flag from your local MP, fly it proudly and show Peter Dutton his Trump style culture wars won’t work,” Senator Cox added.

“As we head rapidly towards the 2025 election year, it’s so important we build a beautiful inclusive society grounded in Truth and Justice. The time is now to move this nation forward, not backwards.”
