Blockades postpone Kokoda Leadership trek
By PETER ROWE
Several Indigenous teenagers hoping to take part in the 2024 Kokoda Leadership Development Program to Papua New Guinea have had their trip postponed until next year because of land disputes in the country.
The Kokoda Track closed in September as traditional landowners fought compensation claims from the PNG government and blockaded the route.
The track is open again, but it was not reopened in time for the planned trek at the end of November.
The 2024 Kokoda Leadership Development Program, run by the Y WA, has been rescheduled to take place from March 25 – April 6, 2025.
“This timing also avoids the wet season from the end of December to the beginning of March, ensuring a safer and more rewarding experience.” A statement from the YMCA organising team said.
