
Indigenous inmate dies in maximum-security prison
A 46-year-old Indigenous inmate has died in a West Australian maximum security prison.
The 46-year-old Aboriginal man was found unresponsive in his cell in Casuarina Prison, Perth on Tuesday night.
Prison officers and medical staff provided first aid to the man before paramedics arrived, the WA Department of Justice said today.
The prisoner was declared dead at the scene.
The department said preliminary reports indicated there were no suspicious circumstances.
WA Police are investigating the incident.
A mandatory death in custody report will be prepared for the coroner.
Casuarina Prison is the main maximum-security prison for male prisoners in WA.
