Call us Yartapuulti: Port adopts new name

June 20, 2025

Port Adelaide Football Club has announced it will be known as the Yartapuulti Football Club for all games played during Sir Doug Nicholls Round, AFLW Indigenous Round and SANFL First Nations Round.

The name change will be in place this week until May 26 to reflect the two weeks of Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

Yartapuulti will host Geelong on Saturday 17 May at Adelaide Oval, and travel to Optus Stadium to take on Walyalup (Fremantle) on Saturday, May 24.

The change to Yartapuulti was developed with extensive consultation with the Kaurna Language Committee, Kaurna Senior, and past player, Uncle Mickey Kumatpi Murrutya O’Brien, and Head of Programs, Braedon Talbot.

Yartapuulti is the traditional Aboriginal name for Port Adelaide. In Kaurna language, ‘Yarta’ means place or land and ‘Puulti’ means sleep or death, which is the name the Kaurna people gave the land around the Port River.
