Cobbo future at Broncos uncertain as salary cap bites

March 16, 2025

Indigenous league star Selwyn Cobbo has said the connection to his community will be central to his NRL future as rumours grow that he could be squeezed out of the Broncos.

Brisbane are on the verge of signing Kotoni Staggs to a new $2 million contract extension, which has cast doubt over whether they can keep Cobbo as well.

Cobbo, 22, grew up in the town of Cherbourg in south-east Queensland and dreamed of playing for the Broncos. He has said he doesn’t want to go anywhere wants to stay in Brisbane, close to his family.

“I went back home to get away from footy, which I like to do when we have a couple of days off,” Cobbo said on Yahoo.

“When I go back to my home town I reconnect with all my family. Everyone in Cherbourg is my family, from the little kids all the way to the elders. They keep me grounded and it puts a smile on my face. I am able to take the shoes off and reconnect with my country.”
