Custodians steadfast in seeking heritage listing

January 15, 2026

Traditional custodians are standing by their insistence in seeking World Heritage listing for the Murujuga cultural landscape in the Burrup Peninsula in WA.

“As the organisation representing traditional owners and custodians for Murujuga in north Western Australia, we believe the Murujuga cultural landscape should be on the World Heritage List and we are very proud of our nomination,” the organisation said in a statement.

“The evaluation report provides the pathway to finalising World Heritage Listing and while the referral adds another small step to our journey, it is a positive outcome and not a rejection.

“While it is disappointing, we are determined to finish our journey and see the Murujuga cultural landscape included on the World Heritage List as soon as possible.”

The ICOMOS evaluation report and draft decision on the Murujuga cultural landscape nomination published by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee last week noted the quality of the nomination and acknowledged that the cultural landscape has exceptional heritage value.

“The evaluation found that Murujuga Cultural Landscape has integrity and authenticity, is in a good state of conservation, and has appropriate protection, management and monitoring, the organisation said.

“The evaluation is exceptionally positive about the Murujuga Cultural Landscape and while MAC is deeply disappointed with the recommendation to refer the nomination back to the State Party, we are now working through the recommendations from the report.”
