Indigenous communities in the Gulf of Carpentaria are preparing to face a tropical cyclone tomorrow with damaging winds as high as 110 kilometres per hour.

“There is a developing low pressure system that’s currently located near the Gove Peninsula,” Weather Bureau forecaster Rebecca Patrick said.

“It has moved quite quickly overnight across the northern coast of the Top End and is expected to move into the Gulf of Carpentaria over the next 24 hours.”

“We could see some gale-force winds developing over Groote Eylandt as early as [Saturday] morning.”

The strong winds are expected to extend further along the Northern Territory coast between Alyangula to Queensland border.

Earlier this week, the community of Pigeon Hole, some 700km south of Darwin, was flooded with residents relocating to the community’s flood shelter.

There are currently flood warnings in place in the Northern Territory:

* Victoria River
* Daly River
* Katherine River
And a general flood watch for the entire Top End

Residents take shelter at the Pigeon Hole community centre.
