April 30, 2025

Cricketing legend Jason Gillespie would love to see more young Indigenous cricketers making it to State and national level.

Gillespie has been in Mackay for the National Indigenous Cricket Championships with 11 State teams taking part, both men and women.

“This championship is absolutely fantastic, I just want to see more of it, because it’s really cool,” Gillespie told NITV.

“These tournaments are a great start to play against good quality opposition.”

Gillespie, 49, was the first Indigenous man to play for the Australia Test team, making 71 Test appearances.

The pace bowler was in Mackay to catch his son Jackson play for South Australia.

“He loves his cricket and is very excited about it, and wants to play at the highest level he possibly can,” Gillespie said.

Gillespie said there were so many opportunities now for young cricketers – domestically and overseas.

“It’s not just state cricket, BBL, cricket for Australia,” he told NITV. “You can go and play in the various tournaments and leagues around the world.
