Fisherman punches croc on nose to escape attack

An Indigenous man spearfishing in far north Western Australia escaped an attack from a crocodile by punching the reptile in the nose, local rangers have revealed.

The man was fishing on a remote stretch of the Dampier Peninsula, over 2,000km north of Perth, on Sunday, when the three-metre saltwater crocodile attacked him.

Bardi Jawa rangers told local media the man, who did not wasn’t to be interviewed, punched the reptile once on the nose before making a fast retreat.

He suffered minor injuries and was treated at Broome Hospital before being g discharged.

Bardi Jawa ranger Kevin George told the ABC he knew the man.

The man was spearfishing off the coast in Bardi Jawa country.

“He was just doing his Bardi thing by feeding his family from the sea and he was attacked by this crocodile,” Mr George told an ABC reporter.

Mr George said crocs had been spotted in the area and ranger usually managed to remove them.

Rangers have issue warnings to locals and tourists about the dangers of boating and swimming in the area.

“Be careful when you come up to the Kimberleys, it’s a different country,” Mr George added.
