First Nations veterans have being honoured for their past and current service in the Australian Defence Force in a ceremony in Sydney.

Dozens of their portraits are being flown on flags, in an open air exhibition, to remember those who defended and continue to protect Australia.

Over 15,000 First Nations people have served in the ADF, although that number is thought be much higher as any serving Diggers in WW1 not of European heritage were not included in statistics.

James Mimi, who served for 24 years, was inspired by his uncle in uniform.

“Im probably the fourth generation to have served,” he said.

“You look back at World War One, World War, Korea and Vietnam, weren’t even recognised as people , but we still put our hands up to protect this country.”

90 flags depicting First Nations veterans will fly on Pyrmont Bridge in Sydney until next week, as a mark of respect to those who served Australia.
