Eleven Indigenous athletes will be part of the Australian Olympic team that will take part in the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games along the river Seine overnight.

Led by flag bearers Jessica Fox and Eddie Ockenden, the team will travel on one of 85 boats in the procession, which will carry them on the 42-minute journey – the first time the Olympic opening ceremony has been conducted outside a stadium – and on water.

As Australia is a future host of the Games (Brisbane 2032), the Australian Team will travel on the third last boat, ahead of the next Games’ hosts United States (LA 2028) and France, hosts of Paris 2024.

Indigenous rugby star Maurice Longbottom has already played a major pat at the Olympics, scoring a try and kicking a penalty as Australia beat the USA in quarter-finals of the Sevens event.

In front of 60,000 fans in Paris the green and gold powered their way to a semi-final clash against Fiji and a chance of medal.

Fiji defeated Ireland in a thrilling 19-15 quarter-final win. In the earlier quarter-finals, South Africa upset New Zealand 14-7 before host nation France beat Argentina 26-14.

* You can watch the opening ceremony on Channel 9 from 3.30am AEST (1.30am AWST)
