Indigenous women’s rights pioneer to be honoured
A pioneer for Indigenous rights is to be honoured with a mural in Melbourne.
The Victorian State government has commissioned a painting of Yorta Yorta woman Margaret Tucker in a park near Footscray Train Station.
The plan is part of a State government idea to increase representation of women in public art.
The $1.2 million investment, announced on International Women’s Day on Friday, will include five statues of female achievers to be placed around the state.
The statues will include Aboriginal activist Louisa Briggs at the St Kilda foreshore and first Australian women’s cricket captain Barbara Rae to be placed in Bendigo.
“She’d be embarrassed [by the mural] but she’d be very proud and she’d say just keep fighting for the good of all,” great granddaughter Tania Rossi told the ABC.
