Man dies after incident in Alice supermarket

A 24-year-old Aboriginal man has died in the custody of police after being restrained at a supermarket in Alice Springs.

An NT police spokesperson said two officers, who were in the Coles supermarket at the time, responded to the incident about 1.10pm on Tuesday after an altercation with a security guard.

“A short time later, the man stopped breathing and CPR was commenced,” police said.

“St John Ambulance attended the scene and the man was conveyed to Alice Springs Hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after 2:20pm.”

“The incident which occurred in Alice Springs yesterday is now subject to formal investigation,” NT chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said in a statement.

“My thoughts are with the family of the man who passed away.

“I have been briefed directly by the Acting Police Commissioner.

“This remains an active police investigation and will be subject to the coronial process.”
