April 30, 2025

An Indigenous man riding an e-bike in Sydney has died in a collision with a police car early on Friday morning.

The incident happened in the inner-Sydney suburb of Waterloo at about 3am.

An investigation is underway into the death of the man, 48, which will be overseen by the police watchdog.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna alleged the man had a “significant” amount of methamphetamine and $10,000 cash in his possession.

“At some point, the police vehicle and the e-bike [were] involved in a collision,” he said.

Asst. Commissioner McKenna denied suggestions that officers had targeted the man.

Police are believed to have notified the man’s next-of-kin, community elders and the Aboriginal Legal Service.
