New CEO for Torres Strait Regional Council
Charlie Kaddy has been appointed as chief executive of the Torres Strait Regional Authority for a three-year term after acting in the role since last year.
Mr Kaddy was previously acting CEO with the Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea and Land Council.
A proud Dauareb man from the Meriam Nation, Mr Kaddy has extensive experience in governance and leadership programs for the TSRA and brings a wealth of knowledge to the role.
“Mr Kaddy’s appointment reflects our government’s commitment to First Nations leadership in decision-making,” Minister for Indigenous Australians, Senator Malarndirri McCarthy said.
“His experience and knowledge of the Torres Strait region puts him in an excellent position to lead the organisation and deliver positive outcomes for communities.
“We are committed to working hand-in-hand with the TSRA to strengthen self-determination and economic opportunities for Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people.”
Mr Kaddy will be supported by the TSRA Board, comprising 20 democratically elected Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal members from across its communities.
The Torres Strait Regional Authority plays a vital role in advancing the social, cultural and economic aspirations of Torres Strait Islander communities.
As a corporate Commonwealth entity established under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2005 (ATSI Act), it is uniquely placed to preserve Ailan Kastom (island custom), implement community programs, shape regional policies and provide culturally specific advice and support for Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people living in the Torres Strait region.
