Indigenous NRL star Latrell Mitchell was jeered by the Sydney Roosters’ home crowd on Friday night as South Sydney capitulated in Round Three of the new season, going down 48-6 to their fierce rivals.

Mitchell was jeered with every touch of the ball and left to the sin bin in the final 15 minutes for impeding Roosters skipper James Tedesco on a kick chase.

Another Indigenous star, Jack Wighton, a Wiradjuri, made his debut for the Rabbitohs with a below par performance  as the Roosters dominated the game.

The loss leaves Souths winless through the opening three rounds and at risk of finishing the weekend last on the ladder for the first time since 2010.

“It hurts,” coach Jason Demetriou said.

Jack Wighton’s debut for Souths ended in a dismal defeat.

“It’s probably the lowest point in my career right now.

“The monkey’s on our back and you can see that in our resolve at times. There’s some effort there, but it’s put into the wrong places.

“There’s only one way out and that’s staying together and fighting, training well next week and getting back on the horse.”
