NT govt scraps treaty plan
The Northern Territory government has confirmed it will scrap plans for a treaty with Aboriginal people.
After a seven-year process, the CLP government under Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro, said her party had never supported a treaty.
“Our focus is on local community government reform, Ms Finocchiaro said.
NT opposition leader Selena Uibo said it was extremely disappointing, but not a surprise that the State government has taken this decision.
“Now we see the CLP government has closed all ears, all heart and mind to what treaty could look like in the Territory,” she said.
Member for Mulah Yiniya Guyula was equally disappointed.
“This treaty, yo, they need to understand, they need to listen and accept the fact they are wrong,” he said.
“They are doing a lot of damage when they say ‘no’.”
