OPINION: The forgotten few wonder why they should vote

May 24, 2025

With three days to go until the Federal election, it is worrying to read that the only reference to Indigenous issues has been the spat over Welcome to Country ceremonies.

Indigenous voters across Australia have highlighted the issues that impact the regional and remote communities they live in.

The cost of living crisis with consistently high prices for groceries, petrol, rent and services.

The lack of economic opportunities.

Basic health issues, the absence of clean drinking of water in remote communities.

Inadequate housing and overcrowding that then plays in to all of the above.

And guess what? Silence.

Complete silence from those expecting us to vote for them.

Lots of shaking hands and kissing babies, but any real action to address the Closing the Gap issues that have been forgotten at this election?

It would seem not.

Flags and right wing cultural wars are the order of the day as First Nations people wonder, again, why they have been forgotten.
