Perth protests against deaths in custody

June 20, 2025

A third day of protests after the death of 24-year-old Kumanjayi White saw dozens gather in Perth to call for justice against Indigenous deaths in custody.

Mr White, 24, died in police custody in an Alice Springs supermarket late last month.

Rally organiser Hedley Hayward told the ABC there community had had enough of a growing number of deaths.

“We are so sick and tired of these things happening, and the police or the government really don’t care what’s going on,” he said.

“In 1990 there were over 300 recommendations made for [preventing] Aboriginal deaths in custody, and it is still happening today … how many times is this still going to happen without something really being done about it?”

The protest was joined by family members of Lynton Ryan, who died in custody on April 2.

He was found unresponsive in his cell at Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison in Kalgoorlie.

A coronial investigation is under way into his death.

Mr Ryan’s brother Shannon Smith told media they wanted answers.

“We want them to not make us wait three years for answers,” he said.
