Push for Indigenous public holiday in Victoria

March 25, 2025

By PETER ROWE

A public holiday celebrating Aboriginal culture has been proposed by Victoria’s Labor government as the State’s treaty negotiations continue.

Other ideas discussed include early access to seniors cards for Indigenous elders and a community-led assembly to have oversight on Indigenous affairs spending.

Victoria’s truth-telling Yoorrook inquiry heard from Gunditjmara man Rueben Berg, who said his community wanted to see the First Peoples’ Assembly given a greater say over policy and funding decisions that affected Aboriginal communities.

“Really we want to make sure that when the government is spending funds on First Peoples that it’s spending it at the right places,” he said.

Negotiations for a statewide treaty between Victorian Aboriginal communities and the Victorian government is expected to start late this year.
