Reconciliation Week street banners on display
Over 300 banners will be flown across Western Australia during National Reconciliation Week featuring artwork by local Noongar artist Darryl Dempster.
Darryl’s artwork ‘Snake Nest’ encourages a dialogue about the importance of family, nurturing, and the natural world, and stands as a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of Indigenous peoples, blending traditional symbolism with contemporary artistic expression.
For the first time this year, families and individuals have joined local governments and participating organisations, to demonstrate their support of reconciliation by sponsoring a banner as part of the National Reconciliation Week Street Banner program.
The long running campaign is a visual demonstration of collective support for reconciliation from communities across WA. It demonstrates our shared commitment to building strong and positive relationships with First Australians.
“National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about and reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and is an important opportunity to strengthen support for reconciliation and truth-telling,” Aboriginal Affairs Minister Don Punch said.
“This year’s theme ‘Bridging now to next’ and the ongoing connection between past, present and future, is reflected in these banners, and I thank all those who have shown their support of reconciliation through this initiative.”
The National Reconciliation Week Street Banner program is an annual initiative run by Reconciliation WA that promotes awareness of National Reconciliation Week via street banners featuring artwork by an emerging Western Australian Aboriginal artist.
These banners are an invitation to everyone to reflect on our shared histories, cultures, and futures.
“Each year, the Reconciliation Week Street Banners serve as a vibrant showcase of support for the cause of reconciliation across Western Australia,” Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk said.
“Darryl Dempster is to be congratulated on being chosen to have his stunning artwork represented across the State, and I commend the families and individuals who have joined in support for this initiative and for reconciliation.”
