Schools remain closed amid cyclone aftermath

March 6, 2026

Hundreds of schools across southeast Queensland and northern NSW will remain closed tomorrow as ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred continues to smash the east coast and affect many Indigenous communities.

Qld Premier David Crisafulli said that schools not damaged by the storm could re-open if it was safe to do so.

“By 5pm today, every school will have a status of open or closed,” he said.

“Where it’s safe to do so, schools will reopen with the exception of the Gold Coast.”

Northern NSW, which is dealing with severe flood risks will keep schools closed on Monday.

It is anticipated that schools will open midweek.
