The residents of the far North Queensland community of Wujal Wujal devastated by Cyclone Jasper are safe in Cooktown, but many are asking where the help is coming from to rebuild.

The Cyclone tore through the small community of 300 people earlier this week as emergency services eventually airlifted them to safety.

Elder Kathleen Walker, Nana Kay to her community, said her home was gone and she had nowhere to go.

“I’m scared to go back and live there in that house,” she told ABC news. “I’ve lost everything. I will probably move to a higher place.”

Coraleen Shipton told the ABC that the region had had plenty of floods before but not as bad as this one. “It kept raining and raining and raining,” she said.

Ms Shipton highlighted their plight when explaining the community was now homeless.

Coraleen Shipton asked where the government help was.

“We’re just refugees now mate, when will the government, the politicians help?

“We just wanna be home.”

Residents have been offered short-term accomodation in Cooktown, but with the road to Wujal Wujal closed it could be months before they are able to return home.
