“Wildly irreverent’ show a must watch for our community

Yes, we know it’s a subscription streaming service but Thou Shalt Not Steal on Stan is one show our indigenous communities will want to watch.

Robyn, a young Aboriginal girl, escapes from detention and reluctantly teams up with awkward teenager Gidge. Together they flee her small central desert community on a perilous journey across the outback.

That’s the official show brief, as it is described as both a drama and a comedy.

The first episode sees Robyn, played by Sherry Lee-Watson, breaking out of juvenile detention to see her dying grandfather Ringer, only to discover that he wants her help to escape the hospital and return home to do one last thing.

Watson, who is also known for her role in Heartbreak High, is joined by Will McDonald as Ridge in an eight-part series that has a pretty significant opening.

“Them missionaries reckon thou shalt not steal. Bit rich from the Bible-bashing bastards that stole our country!” 17-year-old Robyn declares.

Robyn and Ridge flee a small central desert community across the outback – it was filmed around Alice – on a journey, essentially about life’s lessons, with some funny twists along the way.

The Guardian calls it ‘wildly irreverent’ – and it’s wildly worth watching.

Watch Thou Shall Not Steal on Stan new episodes every Thursday.
