By PETER ROWE
Woodside Energy has committed $20 million to support the next phase of the redevelopment of Roebourne District High School in Northern WA.
New facilities at the school will provide greater focus on Aboriginal history, culture and language and will deliver additional classrooms and rooms to support Aboriginal education officers and student support services.
“This is an incredible project, with significant community engagement ensuring the Roebourne District High School community’s needs and aspirations were incorporated into its development,” Premier Roger Cook said.
“The redevelopment will significantly enhance the educational experience of local students here in Roebourne, providing them with state-of-the-art facilities that honour and integrate their cultural heritage.”
Woodside Energy chief executive Meg O’Neill acknowledged that education of young people in a culturally appropriate environment was a great idea.
“It sets them up for success, was a key consideration in our decision to support the upgrades,” she said.
Indigenous Minister Tony Buti said he was thrilled that both staff and students would benefit from the new facilities.
“This has been a collaborative effort to ensure that students and staff have a high-quality learning environment to be proud of, and also a strong connection to Aboriginal history, culture and language,” he said.
