Indigenous superstar Jessica Mauboy’s voice will be the inspiration for Australia’s Olympic team when the Paris 2024 Olympics officially opens on Friday.
Mauboy’s song Higher is the official team song, released via Warner Music on July 11.
And the lyrics lend themselves to the current NAIDOC theme, “we’re burning with a fire that won’t fade away… keep it burning on and on…”
The action actually starts today (Wednesday) as the men’s Rugby Sevens team take on Samoa at 11:30pm (AEST), live on C9.
In that team will be Indigenous star Maurice Longbottom from Sydney.
The ‘Magician’ plays for the Randwick club and is a former South Sydney junior.
Told he was too small for league, Maurice has consistently proved doubters wrong.
Maurice made his Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games, scoring once and holding a 100 per cent conversion success rate in Australia’s 42-5 victory over South Korea.
Maurice scored 28 points over the course of the tournament, the most of any Australian player at the Games.
A carpenter by trade, Maurice is a proud Dharawal man, he says his greatest ambition is to be a good role model for the next generation of Indigenous athletes.
